Hello!

My name is Dr. Jacquelyn (Jackie) Works.

I was born in California and my family moved to Port Orchard, Washington when I was three years old. I grew up in Port Orchard with my two younger sisters, on a small farm with cattle, chickens, pigs, ducks, dogs, cats, and several other miscellaneous species. I loved growing up on a small farm with all of the animals and, for as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a veterinarian. So as soon as I could get a driver's license I began working for one of the local veterinary hospitals, and getting ready for college.

After high school I attended Oregon State University. In 1992, while still at Oregon State, I was introduced to llamas and alpacas for the first time when I went to work with the Veterinary School's research herd. These unique animals caught my interest. I was hooked! I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Oregon State in June 1993. In August 1993, I began my veterinary studies at Washington State University and I continued my interest in alpacas and llamas. During the summer of 1996 I took a short break to get married to my husband (whom I had been dating since I was an undergraduate at Oregon State). Then in 1997 I graduated with my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Washington State.

After graduation I was offered the position of Resident Veterinarian at Alpacas of America. I worked for them for about two and one-half years, taking care of a herd of around two thousand alpacas. This was a unique and valuable experience as it provided me with the opportunity to become well versed in pregnancy ultrasound, medical ultrasound, herd management, general medicine, reproduction and cria care. After leaving Alpacas of America in 1999 I went to work for a mixed animal practice in Sedro Woolley, Washington. I worked for North Cascade Veterinary Hospital for almost three years as a mixed practitioner - with a strong emphasis in alpacas. My time as a mixed practitioner allowed me to expand my knowledge base, giving me the ability to adapt treatments for other species to the alpaca. In October 2002 I left North Cascade Veterinary Hospital because my husband had been transferred to his company's corporate headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

With the move came my decision to start a mobile veterinary service for alpaca and llama owners. It began as a service for my clients in the Skagit Valley, since I enjoyed working with them so much and I did not want them to be without veterinary support. And it has grown from there. I now have wonderful clients from Alger, Washington south to the Columbia River. I am available to travel to farms in western Washington and Oregon, providing a wide array of services.
